Looking for a challenging hike? The Lost Mine Trail, in Big Bend National Park, may just fit the bill. While relatively short, at about 4.8 miles round trip, the trail climbs up about 1,000 feet. That’s a steep incline!
Adding to the difficulty, the legendary Texas sun may be beating down the whole time. It’s always best to start a hike in the early morning. That way, you’ll avoid a lot of the intense afternoon sun. Also, you should slather on plenty of sunscreen and bring some to apply as the day goes on.
Make sure to bring plenty of water! Dehydration is one of the most dangerous hazards on any hike. All hikers should probably bring more water than they think they’ll need.

Rattlesnakes can also be found along the trail. They generally want to bother you about as much as you want to bother them. Unofficially, the number of rattlesnakes biting people in Big Bend National Park is pretty low. However, you should always watch where you put your hands and feet, and if you happen to see a snake, give it a wide berth. Remember that the park is the snake’s home, and you’re just a visitor.
So why hike this trail, if it’s so strenuous? Well, it’s simple. The Lost Mine Trail offers some of the best views of any hike in the state of Texas. You can enjoy seeing Juniper and Casa Grande Canyons from a higher perspective. Also, the hike will take you through some amazing oak and pine forests.
Even better, the way back is all downhill. So, you can be taking an easy walk during the hottest part of the day, if you time it right.

Kids also hike this trail, but they need to be careful. The Lost Mine Trail has some severe drop-offs, with no fences or other safety features to protect careless children. It’s a good idea to wear appropriate hiking shoes, no matter your age. Was there ever a lost mine in the area? According to legend, there was. Supposedly, its location was kept secret. Workers were even blindfolded before arriving to ensure that no one knew the mine’s location.
So, if you’re looking for a hike, try the Lost Mine Trail! You will have an opportunity to enjoy Texas’s natural beauty, and you may even find a piece of history.
